The upcoming major release of LibreOffice version 7.0 under development at the moment. I have extracted some information about the possible features and updates from official sites. Have a look.
LibreOffice, the popular free and open-source office suite has come a long way from the initial OpenOffice days. It is now a default office suite for almost all Linux Distributions and being used heavily in Windows and Mac. With its popularity and user base increasing, developers are adding more features into LibreOffice so that users can experience a top tier free office suite.
The upcoming major LibreOffice release version 7.0 is due in early August 2020. Here’s the release plan.

Features, Updates: What’s Expected in LibreOffice 7.0
- New Branding Image: The old branding image is moving away in LibreOffice 7.0. Instead, a complex shape image coming up in About and Start Page dialogs.
- Performance improvements for heavy uses and for all use cases across modules – Writer, Calc, Impress, Draw, Math, and Base.
- The underlying Cairo graphics library was replaced with Skia library
Writer
- Navigator is overhauled in Writer.
Calc
- New Calc functions – Non-volatile random number generating functions that are not recalculated on every input: RAND.NV() and RANDBETWEEN.NV()
- Functions that use regular expressions as argument now can accept accurate case sensitive inputs.
Impress and Draw
- Automatic positioning fixed for superscripts and subscripts in Textboxes while editing
- Improvements of DOCX, PPTX, PPT filters with LibreOffice being more backward compatible with older Microsoft Office.
Toolbars and Icon Theme
- All toolbars are locked by default now on fresh user profiles.
- Added a new Sukapura icon theme. That icon theme will be a default theme for new LibreOffice installations in macOS.
- Tango icon theme is removed from the core but will be available as an extension.
Others
- Macromedia Flash export filter was removed as Flash player will be end-of-life by the end of 2020
- Macro: Support for building against the obsolete CPython 2.7 has been removed, and scripts are now always executed on CPython 3
- Introduced basic HiDPI scaling for Qt5. So if you are using KDE based Linux distributions and uses the high-resolution display, LibreOffice would look nice.

LibreOffice 7.0 is in active development and is not recommended for download and install for general users, production installations. If you want to take a risk/experiment, grab your daily build copy from below for Windows, Linux, and macOS.

These are the list of changes expected at the moment and not a complete list. As we move towards the final release, more information about changes and updates would be available. I will keep this page updated.

I would really expect a more refined editor for inserting a “formula” (probably one that would move closer to fully suffice as an alternative to Math Type), and an “automatically hyphenate text as I write” feature.
I also expect to be able to edit a bit more of inserted images…
Otherwise – be sure of that – even if we do try our best to move our pupils towards open-source, there will still be an “it works better in M$” attitude…

I have vision problems, and truly welcome some recent changes in LO regarding icons, dark themes and possibilities of personalizing document background to pale yellow instead of the shining white eye tiring background. Yet, the tiny line indicating misspelled words in Writer is hard for me to see, probably due to my inability to see mistakes in my documents. I am a LaTeX writer of technical papers with lots of equations, and use TeXStudio for that purpose, in TeXStudio it is possible to configure the IDE to show a whole misspelled word in red instead instead of the tiny red curvy line beneath, and believe IT MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE TO DETECT ERRORS. Would it be possible to introduce such option in LO writer? Also, if you you LO Writer with a dark linux theme equations become invisible since they appear black y a dark gray background, Could this be fixed?
Unfortunately, this feature is not available at the moment. Only thing you can do is increase the ZOOM settings so that it is more visible to you.
