How can we generate a block of random text in LibreOffice Writer? In this tutorial, we will show you how.
It is often needed to generate a random block of text for various purposes e.g. checking fonts, paragraphs, styles etc.
However, you can always use your own text for your needs. LibreOffice Writer provides a way to generate a block of random texts in a simple way.
Follow the below steps.
Generate Random/Dummy Text in LibreOffice Writer
- Open a blank document in Writer.
- Type this text: dt
- Then press function key F3. Once pressed, you can see below the block of dummy text automatically displayed in Writer. Now, you can use this auto-generated text for your needs.
You can also customize this built-in dummy text using the option from the Menu: Tools -> AutoText; Standard -> Dummy Text.
Create custom autotext in LibreOffice Writer
- To save content as an AutoText entry, you can choose from different options such as text, text with graphics, tables, or fields. If you want to store graphics, make sure they are anchored as a character with at least one text character before and after them.
- Select the text or image which you want to add as autotext.
- While the text is being selected, from menu select Tools > AutoText.
- Select the category where you want to store the AutoText.
- Enter a name which should be more than four characters. If you want, you can modify the proposed shortcut. For this demo I have given a shortcut as “t1”.
- Click the AutoText button, and then choose New or New (Text).
- Click the Close button.
- Now go to Writer, type “t1” (or the shortcut you’ve given). Then press F3.
- You should see the autotext inserted at the cursor position.
So, this is how you can generate dummy text in Writer.

OK Very thanks
While this is dummy text, it’s hardly “random”, neither is a Lorem Ipsum. I’m looking for something like that generated by adhesiontext.com. Is there an extension for this?
